The oil and gas industry ranks as one of the most significant global sectors, generating an estimated $4.2 trillion in revenue as of late 2024. Oil is an indispensable resource that underpins the global economy, affecting everything from transportation to heating, electricity generation, and industrial production.
About Hydrocarbons
Crude oil and natural gas are primarily composed of hydrocarbons, which are naturally occurring chemical compounds made up of hydrogen and carbon atoms. These hydrocarbons are found in abundance in the Earth’s crust and form through a long process that starts with the decomposition of ancient organic matter, including plants and animals, which become trapped in sedimentary rocks. These rocks, such as sandstone, limestone, and shale, were originally created from the deposition of sediments on the ocean floor, where the remains of plants and animals were buried. Over millions of years, heat and pressure transformed this organic material into oil and gas.
Because oil and gas are less dense than water, they naturally migrate upwards through porous layers of rock. When they reach less-porous rock layers called cap rock, they become trapped and form oil and gas reservoirs. These reservoirs represent the world’s known supplies of crude oil and natural gas. To access these hydrocarbons, companies drill through the cap rock to reach the reservoir. Once the hydrocarbons are extracted, they can be transported to refineries or storage facilities. If the drilling does not yield commercially viable quantities of oil or gas, the well is termed a dry hole and is typically abandoned.
The Three Main Segments: Upstream, Midstream, and Downstream
The oil and gas industry is divided into three key segments: upstream, midstream, and downstream. Each of these segments plays a distinct role in the production, transportation, and refining of oil and gas resources.
Upstream:
The upstream segment consists of companies that focus on the exploration and production (E&P) of oil and natural gas. These companies are responsible for finding and extracting crude oil and natural gas from the earth. Exploration involves searching for new reservoirs, while production entails drilling wells and extracting hydrocarbons from the ground. The upstream sector is highly capital-intensive and carries significant risks due to the uncertain nature of exploration and the technological challenges involved in drilling and production.
Companies in the upstream sector typically do not own their drilling rigs or the equipment needed for exploration. Instead, they often contract with specialized drilling companies that provide the necessary infrastructure and expertise. These drilling contractors charge based on the time they spend working on a well, not based on the amount of oil or gas produced. Once the well is drilled, various services such as logging, casing, cementing, and fracturing are performed to ensure the well remains productive over time.
Midstream:
Midstream companies are involved in the transportation and storage of crude oil and natural gas. These companies are responsible for moving hydrocarbons from extraction sites to refineries and other facilities where the materials can be processed and further distributed. The midstream sector relies on infrastructure such as pipelines, tanker trucks, and shipping vessels to transport raw materials. This segment typically operates with lower capital risks than the upstream sector, as it is primarily focused on transportation rather than exploration. However, midstream operations are heavily regulated, particularly when it comes to the construction and operation of pipelines, which can be subject to strict environmental and safety laws.
In addition to transportation, midstream companies are involved in the storage of oil and gas, ensuring that there is adequate capacity to hold the raw materials before they are processed or transported. The success of midstream companies is closely linked to the performance of upstream firms, as the volume of oil and gas transported is directly tied to the amount extracted.
Downstream:
The downstream sector involves the refining of crude oil and natural gas into finished products and their distribution to consumers. Refineries process raw materials to produce various products such as gasoline, diesel, jet fuel, heating oil, and asphalt. Additionally, the downstream sector includes gas stations where consumers can purchase fuel.
Downstream companies face less risk than upstream and midstream firms since they operate in a more established market with lower levels of uncertainty. However, the profitability of downstream companies can be affected by fluctuations in crude oil prices, which impact the cost of raw materials. The downstream sector also includes petrochemical companies that use oil and gas as raw materials to produce chemicals, plastics, and other industrial products.
Understanding Oil Production Metrics
In the upstream segment, oil production is measured in barrels. A barrel (bbl) is equivalent to 42 U.S. gallons, and oil production is typically reported in terms of barrels per day (bbl/d) or barrels per quarter. In the oil industry, a common notation system is used to express large quantities, with “M” representing 1,000 and “MM” indicating 1 million. For example, a production rate of 7 Mbbl per day means the company is producing 7,000 barrels of oil daily.
Service companies in the oil industry also play a crucial role in maintaining production levels. These companies offer a variety of services, including well maintenance, drilling, and fracturing. Activity levels in the oil sector can be monitored using metrics such as rig counts and utilization rates, which provide insight into the overall health of the industry.
Understanding Gas Production Metrics
Natural gas production is measured in cubic feet. Similar to oil, natural gas quantities are reported using abbreviations such as Mmcf (million cubic feet), Bcf (billion cubic feet), and Tcf (trillion cubic feet). Natural gas futures, however, are traded based on British thermal units (MMBtu), with 1 MMBtu being approximately equal to 1,000 cubic feet of gas.
To make comparisons easier, many oil and gas companies report their production in terms of barrels of oil equivalent (BOE). One BOE is roughly equal to the energy content of 6,000 cubic feet of natural gas or one barrel of oil. This allows companies to provide a unified measure of their overall energy production, regardless of whether they are primarily focused on oil or gas extraction.
Reserves are also an important consideration for E&P companies. These are the quantities of oil and gas that companies own but have yet to extract. Reserves are critical in determining the value of an oil company and in forecasting its future revenues. If an E&P company does not continually replace its reserves through new exploration or acquisitions, its production will eventually decline. As a result, exploration for new oil and gas fields is essential for maintaining or growing production levels.
Integrated Oil Companies
An integrated oil company operates in multiple stages of the oil and gas supply chain, including both upstream and downstream activities. These companies have diverse operations that span the exploration, extraction, refining, and distribution of oil and gas products. By operating across the entire value chain, integrated companies can exert more control over production costs, supply, and market fluctuations. This integration also provides a degree of diversification, as integrated firms have multiple sources of revenue from both the production of oil and gas and the sale of refined products. However, operating in both upstream and downstream segments requires massive capital investment, which creates significant barriers to entry for new companies.

As of 2024, the United States is the world’s largest producer of crude oil, followed by Saudi Arabia, Russia, Canada, and China. When it comes to natural gas production, the top five producers are the United States, Russia, Iran, China, and Canada. These countries dominate global production due to their vast reserves of hydrocarbons and the advanced technologies they use to extract and process these resources. The oil and gas industry is a critical part of the economy in these nations, driving employment, investment, and international trade.
